Use the framework as a recurring architecture review, not a one-time compliance checklist. It organizes non-functional decisions across six pillars: operational excellence; security, privacy, and compliance; reliability; cost optimization; performance optimization; and sustainability.

What it adds

The framework applies to cloud-native applications, migrations from on-premises systems, and hybrid or multicloud deployments. Its cross-pillar perspectives add domain-specific guidance without replacing the six general pillars. The practical value is the shared review language: teams can expose trade-offs instead of optimizing one concern in isolation.

Five core principles shape that review:

  • Design for change: make small changes, collect fast feedback, and measure delivery performance.
  • Document the architecture: record current structure, use cases, decisions, and change history so later reviews have context.
  • Prefer simplicity and managed services: reduce operational burden where a managed capability fits the workload.
  • Decouple components: isolate upgrades, security controls, reliability goals, monitoring, performance, and cost decisions.
  • Keep compute stateless where practical: move durable state into appropriate shared systems so instances can restart and scale independently.

A practical review sequence

Start with a current architecture diagram and the user outcomes the workload must protect. Review every pillar with engineering, operations, security, finance, and sustainability stakeholders; record accepted risks, owners, and measurable targets. Convert findings into prioritized work rather than treating every recommendation as mandatory. Revisit the review after material workload, traffic, regulatory, or organizational changes.

The framework provides recommendations, not a product-selection formula or proof of compliance. Teams still need workload-specific threat models, SLOs, capacity evidence, cost data, recovery tests, and regulatory review.
